These photos are from the ‘free burn’ stage of charcoal making, the kiln has been filled with logs, making sure that the six main airways are kept clear so to be able to feed the fire all the way round with a even supply of oxygen. The kiln has been lit and is by far the most photogenic part of the charcoal making process.
One of the six ports with a clear air way into the central fire.
The lid is kept open for the free burn to let the masses of smoke/steam escape.
